This product is worth every bit of hand washing it requires!!! Yes, it's a tad heavy, but it is lighter than a small child (and I have never heard adults discouraging others not to have children because they are heavy to lift, ha, ha). Besides, I still have two strong arms. The seasoning required after each washing is as simple as drying it with a towel. (One spends more time drying off after a shower--which is likely done daily.)

I received my Lodge oven as a gift over a year ago but used it for the first time only three weeks ago. I made my usual basic beef stew w/ Guinness and red wine, but it came out incredibly--the tenderest beef ever (though purchased from the same butcher) and all flavors perfectly detectable. My guest went back for thirds and even took some to go!

The following week, I got a little fancier and did a large boneless garlic-stuffed pork roast with sauerkraut, onions, caraway, wine, & mustard. I feared that the meat would be a bit tough because I hadn't noticed that the flame was higher than I wanted it to be. To my surprise, though, two amazing things happened: The total cooking time (as gauged by a meat thermometer) was over a half hour less than I had calculated (based on lbs of meat), and the meat was incredibly moist, again with all the flavors very noticeable yet blending to make one delicious taste. I am in LOVE with this product and just ordered one for a friend.

Hard to clean, very heavy
By VitVerified Purchaser from Seattle, WA on 4/24/2007
Pros:
Even heating
Cons:
Handle gets hot, Scratches Easily, Tough To Clean
Describe Yourself:
Casual Cook
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

It is hard to clean and take care of. Cannot be put in dishwasher. Cannot use detergents. Need to keep oily. Otherwise it gets rusted very quickly.
It is also too heavy for my wife to handle.
