couldn't find the proper wire in the box because contractor painted eveything when house was being built. finally found someone to install for me. worth the trouble, works great. only change i would ask is that it turns off at sunrise instead of fixed cycle.

best wall timer so far
By HKRVerified Purchaser from Nw York on 8/8/2007
Pros:
Attractive Design
Cons:
Difficult programming
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Once you get the hang of it, programming has tremendous number of options. The "Zip-set onestep setup" is not really much of a shortcut. I have had many of the old-fashioned push-knob wall timers fail on me - hopefully this will be a great improvement. Another pro is that this can be used with low-wattage halogen bulbs (not all timers can)
One disadvantage is that this can only be installed in a 3-wire box.

Excellent Product

Porch lighting control

Excellent, versatile product at a great price. I'm using two of them to control several outside lights. The area code/sunset feature works great. I have it set to turn the lights on 20 minutes after sunset. Easy installation. The operating/programing instructions could be clearer in a few areas. The unit protrudes from the switchplate more than I'd like (about 1.25") but it's not too unsightly and worth the benefit. Several neighbors of mine have seen it and would like to install one/a few of their own. Overall excellent product.

The little switch that does it all!

Great instructions, Quick Installation, Several Programs
Cons:
Bulky Looking
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It is the best light timer currently available for this price. I have a difficult time waking up in the morning with only an alarm clock and have found that this light timer does the trick for me, it forces me to wake up. I've already recommended this timer to my brother and friends. It pretty much does everything a commercial grade timer would do as well, so it'd be great for a small business(indoors only).

Never come home to a dark porch
By JasonVerified Purchaser from Northern VA on 5/14/2007
Best Uses:
Outdoor lights
Pros:
Attractive Design, Simple Installation, Simple Operation
Cons:
No gangplate included
Describe Yourself:
Do-It-Yourself, Novice
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Exactly what I was looking for, something to turn the front/back door lights on at dark and off in the morning. The "ZIP" configruation feature calculated sunset by your telephone area code which makes configuration very easy. Install was a snap once I picked up the gangplates [...] Note: The load wires are polarity sensitive (not so in the regular switch) and have to be hooked up in the proper order. Since there's no indication of which wire goes to the light and which has current, trial and error is in order. Just make sure to test before you screw in the switch and the gangplate.

I am very pleased with the purchase.
By OzvenaVerified Purchaser from MO on 3/20/2007
Pros:
Easy To Install, Good Value, High Quality, Works with CFL
Cons:
No wall plate
Best Uses:
Outside lights
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I would prefer if I don't have to choose for how many hours the switch will be on. Based on the zip it figures out when to turn on so it should as well be able to figure out when to turn it off. This is really a minor issue. I wish it comes with a wall plate.

However overall I am very pleased. The switch looks so cool when installed!

not a direct switch replacement
By R. GoodeVerified Reviewer from Tucson, AZ on 3/18/2007
Cons:
Bad Value
Bottom Line:

This requires a three wire hook up. Most basic switches only have two wires. Therfore it will not work for most applications. This is a bad design.

Kind of disappointed
By cjVerified Purchaser from NC on 3/14/2007

You can not set it to come on at dusk and off at a particular time. If you like I wanted that capability this will not do it. The "Zip Set" that lets you set by entering your area code calculates sunset and turns the light on at sunset, however your only option at that point to turn it off is to pick to do it 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 hours from whatever time it turned on. I just can figure out why if they go to all the trouble to calculate sundown to keep from turning it on early then wouldn't pay equal attention to the off time which I suspect most folks would want to be a constant (bed time) or sunrise. I can't fault them for not calculating sunrise--they never said they did but given another option is to set on an off at specific times I'd assumed surely you could choose on at sunset and off at a specific time.

Pluses
--It will control a compact fluorescent which for instance similar product offered by Intermatic will not.
--Much cheaper than the Intermatic

Minuses
--Intermatic calculates sunset, sunrise and allows tons more flexibility in it's setup.
--Not really any easier to set up than the Intermatic--keep your manual.
--It sticks out from the switch plate an inch or so and looks rather ugly compared to the Intermatic.

It has it's place and to overcome it's limitations I choose to get a photo cell and wire that in the outside lamp between the bulb and switch. I then programmed the switch to come on at 5:00pm and off at 11:00pm. The photocell will prevent it from actually coming on until it gets dark. Even with the photocell included it cost less than the Intermatic and I use a compact fluorescent in it which I couldn't have what the Intermatic.

Great Value Timer
By TODD THE HOME IMPROVEMENT GUYVerified Purchaser from AUSTIN, TX on 3/8/2007
Pros:
Durable
Cons:
Tough To Assemble
Best Uses:
Exterior Lighting, Porch Light
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The wiring diagram was a little bit off. Instructions for setting time and programming was a little tough to follow. I chose this product because all the Intermatic timers I have used have a faulty design that dies within a year of purchase. Too early to tell on the durability, but a back light feature would be a plus as the LCD display is difficult to read for some.

The zip setup is so easy I was done in under a minute and it works perfectly. The 5 minute on feature is great when you have to run out for just a minute and not have to remember to turn off the lights.

Works great!
By Aaron the handymanVerified Reviewer from Oklahoma City, OK on 1/22/2007
Pros:
Energy Star compliant, Great idea cheap price
Cons:
Tough To Assemble
Best Uses:
Outdoor lighting

I bought this to automatically turn on and off my outdoor lighting for security reasons. It's one switch that controls the porch and garage bulbs. Used the compact florescent type. Now I'm saving energy both ways, with the bulb and the time to be on. You'll need to read up on electrical switch wiring. I had two switches that shared a hot lead which caused a little confusion at first. This was the best product I could find for this simple task and at a great price!
