This fan looks great in our house. It is easy to install once you decifer the parts manual. I bought the first one and it took about four hours to complete the installation. I was weary of the CFL because it was so bright and it was white light; however, I went to [...] and purchased a less intense, softer light and now it looks great. Because of this, I went back and purchased a second fan--the installation time was about an hour the second time around. As with other comments I've seen, I had previously wired my house for ceiling fans. This wiring had controls for both the light and fan. With this product you can only wire the fan to one control switch on the wall (off or on) and the remote does the rest. I overcame this problem by installing the docking station for the remote control over the light switch that was not being used.

Can hook fan up to a wall switch to control the light and then able to use the remote to control (light on/off, and control the fans direction and three speeds).

This fan is designed only to be installed with a remote. As an electrical engineer, I was able to bypass the receiver and wire it directly to the two switches on my wall. However, this was tedious to figure out and I'm not sure the fan is spinning as fast as it should. Hunter's only response to technical questions on their support line is "That is proprietary information and I cannot tell you that sir."

Also, bypassing the receiver does limit the fan's performance. Because it is designed only to be operated with a remote, there are no external switches to adjust the fan direction, so my fan is wired so that it will only spin in one direction.

    Remote is not optional!
By I hate remotes! from Westchester, NY on 2/20/2007
    Pros:
    High Quality, high style

Didn't know that the remote was not optional. Would have selected another fan as I am using it in a teenage basement and don't wan't to depend on the teens locating the remote in order for the fan to operate. I thought we could wire the fan without the remote. It turns out that it is impossible. Also, the photo doesn't show the fan properly in the brushed nickel color. It looks very dark on the web site.
